In various states across the U.S. inmates are provided tablets to use for purchasing music, movies, TV shows, games, making phone calls and receiving/sending messages as well as – in some states – not just receive videos but sending them as well.
Washington State is one of these States that have purchased such tablets, but we in Washington weren’t lucky enough to get the camera feature. Resulting in the Washington State prison population losing their opportunity to send pictures. We now have to wait weeks to be able to take and send polaroids, yes, we know and agree with your initial reaction to this news.
Nevertheless, the ability to make calls from yard, gym, day room, and cell have made profound differences in our relationships with our friends, family, children and significant others. One of the ways the recent and questionable tech “upgrade” has been beneficial is in providing new and romantic experiences that haven’t been available before. I’m talking about date nights!
The app store has a variety of movies to pick from and the tech provider keeps a consistent inflow of new and throwback movies and TV shows. Yes, phone calls are only 20 minutes long so there’s a lot of pausing for us to call you back and once you give us the time stamp of where you paused the movie, may the countdown to play commence! “Press play in 3 … 2 … 1”.
Making time for date nights or binge-watching shows such as Vampire Diaries – a recent addition to my fav’s list – can make your relationships stronger as it’s a new reprieve of the daily obstacles prison relentlessly throws at your relationship. So, take advantage and make the most of what you have and be creative!
Movies that I’ve personally watched on date nights are The notebook, Love and Monsters, 65, A Quiet place (1 and 2), The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and many others. Sometimes I talk during the movie and other times I’m fully immersed, it’s all exciting and new to me as before July of 2023 I haven’t had a date in my entire life!
Sometimes I even make popcorn or a full meal for the movie, so it feels like a true date. In between quality time spent, the pauses for call backs, bathroom breaks, etc. It’s all a worthwhile experience and I recommend it to my friends who often are too cool for this sort of thing initially, but later on I’ll go to their cell, and they’re very much tuned in to a “chicks’ flick”. So, ladies and gentlemen you may have to initiate the date night idea!
As with all relationships in the world, these too, are no different. Finding new, exciting, exotic, thoughtful, selfless and fun ways to keep your relationships strong and healthy are important. That goes for the incarcerated as well! So don’t take on this task alone, call them out! And just live, laugh, and love each other, always.
Thank you for your time, – Brian.
