In prison many people use creative writings, music, and journal entries as a means to deal with their emotions, fears, and mental health. It’s an escape from the reality of their circumstances. Although not many turn any of these outlets into a career. Meet Haifa Mayana, an artist and musician from Seattle. He is the founder of the Seattle Senders clothing company and brand, as well as the artist behind all the artwork on Instagram page @blackbounarotti. However, today we are interviewing him as the author Eniam Art. He’s written six books since he’s been incarcerated, started a publishing company to maintain ownership of his work and created financial freedom for his support system on the outside. He’s putting in the work to change his life into a life of legitimacy.
PrisonBaes: “So you own a publishing company, but at what point did you decide to be an author?”
Eniam Art: “2018. after feeling an overwhelming wave of motivation to create a life around a character.”
PB: “Describe your writing process. Do you outline, plot and plan, or is your writing more organic?”
Eniam Art: “I outline to develop my characters and I imagine who they are, who they aren’t and what they mean to the story. so far I’ve written what I know and what I’ve seen.”
PB: “What advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?”
Eniam Art: “Don’t mention years of cars unless you plan on making the book a time capsule or the year of car has a significant value such as a classic car.”
PB: “Okay, so you got some exciting news! I understand that you have some newly published work!?”
Eniam Art: “My first novel ‘Quean’ is about a San Francisco girl who got into a life of adult entertainment in Nevada, where she becomes a high earner in the industry. Her story is raw and authentic. One I’ve heard from many women I know.
The other book I recently released this past November is called…
‘Boulevard Activities’. It’s about the life of a street orphan with money and his girlfriend. Their dynamic is unusual and toxic. The setting is Tukwila, Washington. Making this the first novel written about Tukwila with street content in it. It’s considered my only “hood” book.
Also, coming up are several follow ups to ‘Quean’. One is called ‘LoveLorn’ and it’s about Quean’s best friend from Bogota, Colombia. The other is ‘Queanside Castle’ which is about Their boss Wallah, a millionaire convict.”
