For some people who aren’t in contact with anyone, the opportunity to be seen and even heard means more to them then they can explain. Here is an individual who has come a long way from the boy they were and into the man that they are today.

“My name is Charles Bukovsky and I’m an inmate that’s doing a 32-year sentence. I have been incarcerated since the age of 17 and I would have never imagined that I would still be incarcerated for this long. Full disclosure, I am in for second degree murder. I take accountability for my choices, but like you I am just a person who has made their fair share of mistakes – like everyone – but as long as society stays in the mindset that punishment alone is the solution for crime we will never excel.

Second chances are what individuals like me need, especially when I haven’t had the opportunity to live my life yet. Before I had received my current sentence, I was in and out of too many juvenile detention centers … yes, I was a problem child. However, I never really had anyone to aid and assist me on how a man acts, carries himself, and looks like. Just like so many of mislead youth in my city of Tacoma, WA I found myself in the gang life.

Looking back, I can honestly say I turned to the life for respect because the friends in my community were going through the same situations and hardships as myself. My second chance was discovered in 2016 when I decided for myself that I still had potential to do great things while being incarcerated.

During my incarceration I have obtained an AAS degree, and I have also enrolled in many empathy classes that have assisted me and my way of thinking as I continue forward in my life and journey within prison. I refuse to remain a disappointment to my family and community; I know in my heart that I won’t be seeing the inside of a prison again. I have long given up my immature ways, I now understand having empathy in a major way.

There is a reason why rules and regulations are in place and sometimes we all need to be checkmated for our choices in life. If i could say anything to today’s youth it’s to remember that life isn’t always about acquiring the spotlight, but if you got it then use it for right, purposeful, and productive reasons that everyone around you can grow and learn from.

I hope you all stay safe out there and I wish you the best.” – Charles
