It almost sounds as if I’m talking about legislators and senators meeting at a baseball field, right?? Trying to swindle more of the tax payers money into their own pockets. Not quite. I mean….most prisoners are pretty knowledgeable about the concept anyways. You can only imagine how this would physically look like if you visualized it. The YARD….is exactly a field. POLITICKING….is just us conversing about whatever topics necessary on the fence line. So, in a way I am speaking of us utilizing the prison yard to settle disputes, catch-up with old cellies or friends, converse about the streets(stroll down memory lane), talk about school, or strategize about how to organize programs in DOC, or just clown around with friends, etc.

It isn’t particularly prison drama because it isn’t always gossip. I’m shooting for more of a prison aspect because it is not always negative but positive as well. This is our social norms and our social platform. There are other areas too but this is about the only space where we have some privacy. It is the only space we have where the CO’s(corrections officer) don’t invade our boundaries. We have the respect of other groups not for them to ear hustle. That would be a big violation for other members to listen in on other groups internal affairs. Obviously, consequences and repercussions will be dealt with accordingly. For the most part, everyone respects each others space. Also, being diplomatic about how we settle disputes carry weight in here too.

This is a big part of what we called, “penitentiary structure”. It allows us to navigate the environment without having to feel like we walking on eggshells. This will treat most of the individuals the price of being ” real”. This will determine if someone is a solid dude or not. The biggest mis-move that someone would ever do is ear hustle. That is why the yard is the most sacred place for any of us to converse about anything, including “politicking”.

Since, I’ve been incarcerated that was the most important lesson learned. Whatever happens in the yard stays in the yard and its never spoken about again. In a sense, it relates to the real world because if people just stay out of peoples business then there wouldn’t be no conflict. I must say that is a concept that I’ve always internalized myself from a child. To see it in real life being practiced makes me believe in the morale of it, especially in a controlled environment. If you ever hear this phrase again, that is what it means. Its basically our meeting spot to handle business or other things as well. Thanks for reading.
